If you are a grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling, etc. raising your relative’s children then you are a Kinship Care provider. There is no formal requirement for you to attend classes or workshops, but many kinship care providers have expressed a desire for more training in specific areas to help them better meet the needs of the children in their care and themselves as well. Kinship Support Groups

  • 2-hour Kinship Support Groups with training are held throughout the county. 
  • Groups have childcare and food available due to sponsorship by the KSSP funds.

Classes for Kinship Caregivers - English

TRADITION OF CARING—taught by a variety of kinship caregiver trainers
This class is a series of 27 hours of training on a wide variety of important subjects all
kinship caregivers should know such as kinship family dynamics, how to work with the
child protection/court system, how to access resources, discipline, mental health issues, etc.


COMMON SENSE PARENTING—taught by a variety of kinship caregiver trainers
Topics include setting clear expectations, giving positive and negative consequences for behavior, staying calm, teaching self-control, using Effective Praise and Preventive and Corrective Teaching, helping children make decisions and solve problems, reaching goals with charts and contracts, and teaching social skills. Also provided are strategies for dealing with the influence of the media, peer pressure, and problems in school.

This fall these two classes are underway in the Kinship Support Groups in the four major areas of the county (North, South, Metro, East). All kinship caregivers (dependency placements, informal placements, KinGap and Kinship Adoption) are welcome.

Clases Para el Cuidado de Parientes - En Español

CUIDADO TRADICIONAL—presentado por entrenadores de cuidado de parientes
Estas clases son una serie de 27 horas de entrenamiento con una amplia variedad de temas
importantes y dinámicas que todos los cuidadores de parientes deben saber como trabajar en
la protección del niño, sistema de la corte, como tener acceso a recursos, disciplina y temas de
salud mental, etc.

LA CRIANZA PRACTICA DE LOS HIJOS
Tópicos incluyen expectaciones claras dar consecuencias positivas y negativas por el comportamiento, estar en calma, enseñarles autocontrol, usando elogio efectivo, y disciplina preventiva y correctiva. Ayuda a los niños a tomar decisiones y resolver problemas, alcanzar las metas con contratos, aprenden habilidades sociales. También provee otras estrategias para manejar la influencia del radio televisión y prensa, la presión de los amigos y problemas en la escuela.Durante este Otoño, las siguientes clases estarán bajo la dirección de los grupos de apoyo parientes/no parientes en las cuatro principales áreas del Condado (Norte, Sur Este, Oeste). Todos los parientes/no parientes (Colocación Dependiente, Colocación Informal, KinGAP, y Parientes/No Parientes Adoptivos) son bienvenidos.
